Portugal, the land of big seafarers and discoverers, in the extreme southwest of Europe on the west coast of the Iberian peninsula in the Atlantic offers countless possibilities to kitesurf. Despite its relatively small surface (only 561 km long and 218 km wide), Portugal fascinates with diverse scenery – rock coasts, sandy beaches, lakes, rivers, mountains, hills, levels, islands … – and the 823 km of Atlantic coast boosts, a multifaceted choice from shallow flatwaterheavens to fat wave-action, and everything in between, lagoon-kitesurfing, rivermouths, chilled cruising in breathtaking scenery and more…..
The surging Atlantic coast here counts with almost uncountable surfspots to Europe’s top-surf locations and the Portuguese value the surfing beside their football highly. Amongst windsurfers Portugal has been a popular Europe-destination for decades due to its rather consistent wind statistics (particularly in the summer months) and also in the kitesurfing-scene it is becoming increasingly popular lately.
I had the pleasure of exploring this amazing country by car for four weeks together with local top-photographer Pedro S.Silva. Check out my detailed spotguide on Portugal in Kitesurf UK or even better: print out the pdf of the article here, book yourself a plane ticket and check it out yourself, you’ll gonna love it!
